Give a gun for Christmas this year!
I posted this over on Knoxville Trivia Blog today, however, I was so pleased with it, I decided to run it over here as well.
Brady Campaign Seeks to ban Toy Guns at Christmas
I was alerted to THIS BIT OF NONSENSE, thanks to our local gun guy, SayUncle.
This got me to thinking about the many warm memories that I have of waking up on Christmas morning and celebrating the birth of Christ by unwrapping a gun. Starting out at an early age of 4, when I received my first cap pistols. I thought I was Marshal Dillon, over in Dodge City, watching out for Ms. Kitty. I can remember begging my mother to buy me some cap refills at the store so I could shoot some more bad guys.
Then as I got a little older, I received my first toy rubber BB gun, you know the kind that shot those little yellow rubber balls. I zinged those suckers all over the place. Shortly afterwards, I moved up to a Daisy BB gun, and then on to a Crossman 760 Pellet Rifle. Of course my dad made me memorize all of the gun safety rules before he let me have it. I can remember walking down Maloneyville Rd. with my Pellet gun resting upon my shoulder, and a Knox Co. policeman pulled up beside me and asked what I was doing. I explained that I was just out looking for Squirrels or Rabbits to shoot at. He asked to see my gun. I handed it to him, he looked it over, handed back to me and said, "that's a nice one, keep it oiled and it will last forever." (My how times have changed huh?)In my teens, maybe 13 or 14, I was given first a hand-me-down Stevens Model 94C, 20-Gauge Shotgun. You can read about the time I dry snapped the firing pin at this LINK. Then, when I turned 15 I unwrapped a Marlin 22 rifle, complete with scope. I had hit the big time! There wasn't a squirrel that was safe anywhere in East Knox Co.
So, you see, when you are brought up around these parts, guns and Christmas just go hand in hand. It's a family tradition passed down from generation to generation, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Oh, and by the way...most everybody that I know and that I grew up with, had the same gun traditions that I had. So far there hasn't been one single person that has ever used a gun to shoot anything other than targets and game...well, except for my family and friends in the military, they've protected our country by shooting the enemy.
So, tell those panty-waisted gun haters to stick it where the sun don't shine, and then go out and buy your kid a gun for Christmas, heck, buy yourself one while you're at it!
