Saturday Morning Cartoons Thing of the Past

When I was a kid growing up in the 70's, one of the biggest thrills of my life was Saturday mornings when I would get up before the rooster would crow, and watch cartoons. I would get up before my parents, slip into the living room and turn on the big black and white console T.V. Usually I would be tuning in just as the U.S. Farm Report would be going off and I would anxiously wait for JOT to come on. JOT was a Christian based cartoon featuring a round ball like character that went around trying to figure out what he should do when faced with negative situations in his life. Then Casper would come on. Of course everyone knows whom Casper the friendly ghost is. Usually by the time Casper was ending, my sisters would be awake and then we would start fighting over what we were going to watch. My very favorites were The Bugs Bunny & Road Runner Hour, Scooby Doo, Shazam, Isis, Land of the Lost, Hong Kong Phooey, and Fat Albert, which was usually the last cartoon that was on. I think it ended around 1:00 in the afternoon.

My kids don't know what it is like to wait in eager anticipation all week just to watch cartoons. Nowadays cartoons are on all of the time. With the Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Disney and all of the other cable channels, you can tune in to a cartoon anytime you want. I got up at 5:00 this morning and flipped on the tube. I scrolled through the listings for the local channels. Not a single local channel (WATE, WBIR, WVLT) airs cartoons until at least 10:00 A.M., they are all showing news instead. Kids don't watch the news! Of course none of this matters anymore. My kids are all still fast asleep on this Saturday morning, well except for my 6 year old daughter, she just got up and is sitting beside me watching some crazy show on Nick Jr, called LazyTown. The times sure have changed!
