When We All Get to Granny's!

One thing that I will always treasure about this time of year are my memories of spending Thanksgiving at my Granny Spencer's. Before she passed away, we always went to her house to spend the holiday. She lived on Edmondson Lane in the Ritta community, which is about 6 miles from my parent's home on Maloneyville Road. We would load up the car with the food that mom fixed and we would start singing before we even left the driveway. What did we sing you ask??? It was none other than our own modified version of "When We All Get to Heaven." My sisters and I changed the words to "When We All Get to Granny's."

When We All Get to Granny's (sang to the tune of When We All Get to Heaven)

When we all get to Granny's
What a day of rejoicing that will be
When we all see Granny
We'll sing and shout the victory

When the Turkey's laid before us
And candy's on display
We will all join together
We'll bow our heads and say Grace

When we all get to Granny's
What a day of rejoicing that will be
When we all see Granny
We'll sing and shout the victory

Yeah, I know, it's a silly song. But, it's one of those things that makes me who I am. I can just picture my sisters and myself sitting in the back seat of the car with huge smiles on our faces and singing that song over and over to the top of our lungs. I can't remember Dad ever complaining about us making too much noise on that day. Any other day, if we had been carrying on with that much racket, he would have been threatening to pull the car over and smack the warm grease out of us! If we were really acting up, you would see his arm all of a sudden reach over the seat in search of the first available leg to smack. But, like I said, Thanksgiving seemed to be different. I guess Dad had visions of turkey, dressing, dumplings, and his very favorite, sweet potato casserole, running around in his head.

Since Granny passed away back in December of '92, we celebrate this day at my parents house. It's a time of family, food, and togetherness. My mom will be quick to tell you that Thanksgiving is her favorite holiday. You can guarantee that we will have enough food to feed all of Knox County, and we'll eat on it for days to come until we get sick of it. Dad will probably try to concoct some type of new food from the leftovers. A couple of years ago he tried making ham salad from the leftover ham...let's just say we won't be trying that one again! ;)

So, happy Thanksgiving to you. May you eat too much and sit around holding your aching belly. I know I will!
