Good to the last drop

Sometimes I sit with my eyes closed and think back on the times when I was just a young boy. I've filled up this blog with many of those memories. I probably haven't even scratched the surface yet on all of the wonderful things that are stored in my head.

Tonight as I sat on my bench and sipped on a cup of coffee, I thought back on all of the mornings that I woke up to the smell of my dad's coffee brewing in the pot. I always loved that smell but hated the taste. I snuck a few sips of his coffee when I was a kid and always thought it tasted like mud. I never dreamed that one day I would be a coffee drinker too.

Dad didn't drink "fancy" coffee. Usually he drank JFG brand. I've known him to drink Maxwell House and Taster's Choice too. I don't remember ever seeing Folgers in the house though. I can still smell that heavenly aroma, wafting through the house early in the morning, permeating my nasal passages. I would wake to that smell, get up and walk into the kitchen where dad would be sitting at the table, coffee cup in hand, reading something. He didn't have an automatic coffee maker. He had one of those old aluminum stove top percolators. I used to love to watch the coffee dance inside the glass knob that was on top. He would fill his cup, spoon in some sugar and a small amount of creamer and stir it. Then he would put the cup to his lips and give a loud sip, then say, "Aahh, that's good coffee!"

Nowadays dad has a small 2-cup electric coffee maker that he uses. He also drinks various kinds of coffee. I believe his favorite is a Kona blend. I normally drink Maxwell House, although if you look in my cabinet right now I have a half dozen varieties. Everything from Coconut flavored and Hazel Nut to 100% Colombian. I like mine with a scoop of Splenda and about a teaspoon of Coffee Mate. I came home from church tonight, brewed a pot of coffee and drank 5-cups. Just like my dad, I took my first big sip and said, "Aahh, that's good coffee!"
