My Mascot Elementary Days

Mascot School in 2002

I've been thinking about my Mascot Elementary kindergarten days for some reason. My dad was a Social Studies teacher there and I attended kindergarten in 1972.

My friends were Chris Wyrick, Robbie Foust, and Mark Lewis. We had lots of fun times playing on the playground. I especially remember riding on some tall tricycles that the school used to have and playing on the monkey bars and merry-go-round.

I loved snack time where we would go to the cafeteria and eat hot homemade bread with butter and chocolate milk. I used to call the lunch lady "Myrtle the Turtle who lost her girdle." She always laughed whenever I would say that.

My class photo. I'm in the top row, second from left.

I was struck on a little blonde headed girl named Cheryl Webster (bottom row 4th from left) and remember standing on a table and cry/singing My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean to her in front of the whole class when I found out I wasn't going to get to come back to Mascot for first grade.

I got in a huge fight with my arch nemesis, Alex Miller (black kid in middle row second from right), in the bathroom one time. We held our fingers over the water faucets in the bathroom sinks and squirted each other so much that we flooded the bathroom all the way out into the hallway. We were both soaked down to our underwear. I can still see the Mascot basketball team sitting on a bench in the hallway looking at the water running down it and saying "that's Mr. Chesney's son." Alex got a whipping and Principal Vittetoe sent me to my dad's classroom for punishment. I must have been a huge embarrassment to him.

It's crazy to think that I can still remember a lot of those things after 50-years. I can barely remember what I had for supper last night!
